With “Play & Play”, Modal Citizen steps out from years of careful studio work to deliver a debut EP on Fraise Records that feels deeply connected to the golden era of Tech House while maintaining a distinctly contemporary edge. Built around shuffling drums, warm low-end pressure, and memorable melodic moments, the release showcases an artist who clearly understands the power of groove, restraint, and dancefloor functionality.
On the A2 cut, “Rising”, Modal Citizen leans into exactly that formula. Driven by a weighty Tech House groove and punchy drum programming, the track immediately establishes a sense of forward motion. A rolling Acid line weaves through the arrangement during the opening stages, injecting energy and tension without overwhelming the groove.
As the track progresses, the Acid elements gradually step aside, making room for a deep and highly memorable melody that emerges during the final third. The contrast between the tougher rhythmic framework and the more emotive melodic section gives the track additional depth, creating a subtle shift in atmosphere while never losing sight of the dancefloor.
“Rising” is the kind of record that thrives on a properly tuned soundsystem. Groovey, driving, and packed with late-night energy, it balances heads-down functionality with enough musical character to linger long after the track has ended. Just as Fraise Records suggests, don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming that melody well into the following day.
