review | Dj Immortal – Ripples EP | Attention Spin!

Dj Immortal, also known as Paul Tellimerg, returns with “Ripples“, his third EP, this time on Dawidu’s imprint, Attention Spin! Having previously released on Momo’s Basement, “Time Bandits”, and Fresh Tunez, “Alpha Synthesis”, this latest offering marks an exciting evolution in his sound. The EP is the result of a creative synergy between Paul and Dawidu, blending their shared love for textured grooves, quirky samples, and bass-driven rhythms. With four distinctive tracks, “Ripples” is an adventurous dive into different shades of electronic music, channeling electro, acid, minimal, and dub elements into a cohesive, dancefloor-ready package.

The EP kicks off with “不朽”, a New Beat/Electro-inspired stormer that pays homage to Tokyo’s vibrant nightlife. A crunchy bassline underpins the track, while Japanese vocals add an extra layer of mystique and character. The combination of sharp percussion and vintage synth textures makes for an immersive and energetic opener, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

Next up is “Vitamin”, a direct nod to one of Paul and Dawidu’s biggest influences: Kraftwerk. The track takes a classic Kraftwerkian groove and injects it with a raw, technoid bassline and acidic flourishes. The robotic precision of the rhythm section is contrasted by the track’s evolving textures, making it a peak-time weapon with a hypnotic and driving edge.

“Shwty” offers a shift in tone, featuring Paul’s brother, LLex, who delivers R&B-infused, vocoded vocals over a minimalistic yet groove-heavy beat. The track flirts with both minimal and HipHop aesthetics, creating a fluid and sultry vibe. With its tight percussion, warm bass, and a sense of effortless cool, “Shwty” stands out as a unique fusion of electronic and urban influences.

Closing the EP is “AF Zone”, a minimal dub anthem packed with playful, rolling grooves and hypnotic chords. This track captures the essence of late-night, groove-driven dancefloors, where subtle shifts in percussion and bassline modulation keep dancers locked in. The deep and immersive nature of “AF Zone” makes it an ideal final statement for “Ripples”, bringing things to a smooth yet energetic conclusion.

With “Ripples”, Dj Immortal present a versatile and forward-thinking EP that highlights his ability to craft club-ready, groove-focused music with a playful and experimental touch. Each track explores different facets of electronic music, from electro and acid to minimal and dub, while maintaining a cohesive and danceable aesthetic. As the second release on Attention Spin!, “Ripples” further cements the label’s identity and offers a promising glimpse into its future. A strong addition to Paul Tellimerg’s growing catalog, this EP is sure to make waves on dancefloors worldwide.
