After a standout EP on BeeYou, Wodda steps up once again with “Have We Met Before?” on Burnski’s Pilot imprint – and if you haven’t crossed paths with his work before, this is the perfect introduction. With two originals and a razor-sharp remix by Reflex Blue, this 22nd catalogue entry on Pilot brings Breaks, Electro, and HipHop influences into a stylish handshake, somewhere between a backroom cipher and an intergalactic boogie.
The EP kicks off with the title track “Have We Met Before?”, a dusty breaks number that flickers with electro nods and mid-90s nostalgia. Scratches slide through the groove like well-worn tricks, the “oh yeah” vocal sample drops in like a knowing wink, and a shimmering, spacey synthline cuts through the centre like headlights on a foggy backroad. It’s got that raw, streetwise charm but keeps one foot floating in deeper territory – a sly, skippy opener that feels like it’s been pulled from an old DAT, remastered for the now.
On the B1, “Go Getter” takes the same Electro-Breaks DNA but pushes it further into HipHop territory. The bassline hits more upfront, almost bullish, while the scratch samples are ramped up and scattered with intention – not just embellishment, but structure. A few sci-fi bleeps enter the mix mid-track, but it’s the scratch-laced rhythm that locks things down. Proper cypher session material if the DJ’s got the guts to flex it.
Closing the record, Reflex Blue delivers a remix of “Go Getter” that takes the vibe into murkier, more Dubstep-adjacent waters. The wobble in the bassline is undeniable, but not overpowering – just enough to shift the weight of the original. Additional vocals drift through the fog, and a late-stage deep-synth wash adds some end-of-night melancholy to the punchy foundation. A subtle twist on the source material, but one that still fits the EP’s core: a celebration of breaks, bass, and bounce.
Altogether, “Have We Met Before?” feels like a flashback and a flash-forward rolled into one – street-smart and system-ready. Wodda sharpens his tools and shows his range, while Reflex Blue confirms what many already know: he’s one of the producers of the moment, and he doesn’t miss.
