review | Public Request / WAS – Sea Correction EP | Oyster Ass

The third release from the French vinyl-only label Oyster Ass sees Public Request and WAS team up for the split EP “Sea Correction”. This record ventures into hypnotic, timeless territories where carefully crafted tracks offer a mind-body journey of dislocation and euphoria. Let’s dive into the tracks.

The EP opens with “C’MON,” a high-octane, break-infused anthem with an acidic undertone that surges through its veins. Hip-hop vocal snippets pepper the track, adding a raw and energetic dimension to its otherwise intricate construction. The breakbeat rhythm is relentless, driving listeners forward with infectious momentum. It’s a strong and dynamic start that sets a vibrant tone for the record.

WAS picks up where Public Request left off but shifts gears into a more Electro-infused minimalism. “Spoon My” maintains the dancefloor energy but trades breaks for crisp electro beats and sparse, precise sound design. The track’s minimalist tendencies allow its subtle details—tweaked synths and rhythmic interplay—to shine, creating an undeniable groove that’s both captivating and functional.

The B-side opens with WAS’s “Ego,” which slows the tempo slightly and introduces a more melodic, introspective vibe. While the pace remains lively, the mood takes a turn towards the deeper end of the spectrum. The track’s lush synth work and layered melodies balance perfectly with its rhythmic structure, offering a moment to breathe without losing the pulse of the dancefloor.

Public Request returns with “Tunnel,” a progressive journey that combines acidic flourishes with a proggy, atmospheric touch. The track’s title aptly reflects its immersive nature, as listeners are drawn into a sonic corridor where cascading layers of sound build and recede. It’s hypnotic and evocative, a highlight of the EP that blurs the line between introspection and movement.

The EP concludes with a short but impactful 2:41-minute outro, a spacey, ambient excursion that strips away the rhythmic drive of the previous tracks. Time and space seem to dissolve in this ethereal coda, offering a perfect cooldown after the intensity of the preceding tracks. It’s a cinematic finish that leaves a lingering impression.

Sea Correction” delivers on its promise to transport listeners to alternate realms. From the high-energy breaks of “C’MON” to the introspective yet driving melodies of “Ego” and the acid-laced progressions of “Tunnel,” this EP offers something for every phase of the night. The collaboration between Public Request and WAS showcases their ability to balance functionality with artistry, making this a standout release and a worthy addition to any collection.
