review | Various Artists – 9FINITY001 | 9FINITY

The launch of Secretsundaze‘s new label, 9FINITY, marks an exciting new chapter in the renowned institution’s history. Helmed by James Priestley, the label draws inspiration from a whimsical moment with his daughter, where 9FINITY became a toddler’s way of describing something vast and limitless. The label’s debut release, “9FINITY001”, sets the tone for what’s to come—discerning dance records that push the boundaries of modern club music. This Various Artists EP brings together a carefully curated selection of tracks from Eoin DJ, DJ Life, Luca Attanasio, Coffintexts, and E-Talking, each offering a unique flavor that encapsulates the label’s musical vision.

The EP opens with Eoin DJ’s “Red Rubber Roses (Rhythm Dub),” a track that perfectly captures the deep yet driving ethos of 9FINITY. With its subtle breakbeat underpinning and a bassline that nods to classic organ house, the track feels like a meeting point between the rugged rhythms of Junior Vasquez and the euphoric energy of contemporary collectives like Radiant Love. The track’s restrained intensity and fluid groove make it a versatile weapon for DJs, offering a modern twist on a timeless sound that’s sure to resonate with dance floors.

Next up on the A-side is DJ Life’s “Aberration,” a track that immediately grabs attention with its brooding D’n’B-style low-end and signature psychedelic flourishes. DJ Life expertly blends these elements into a head-spinning track that defies easy categorization. The mid-track tempo shift is a bold move, injecting a jolt of energy that propels the track into a different realm. “Aberration” is a standout statement of intent, showcasing the label’s commitment to releasing forward-thinking, genre-blurring music that challenges and excites in equal measure.

Flipping over to the B-side, Luca Attanasio kicks things off with “Like You Mind,” a track that embodies the intelligence and sophistication of modern house music. The moody keys and sensual vocal samples create a lush, immersive atmosphere, while the rising bassline adds a sense of urgency and drive. Attanasio’s track is a masterclass in balance—combining groove, emotion, and technical skill to create a piece that’s as danceable as it is introspective. “Like You Mind” is a perfect example of how 9FINITY aims to blend depth with accessibility, making it a strong start to the B-side.

Coffintexts takes things up a notch with “Make U Sweat,” a percussive powerhouse that leans heavily into Latin-inspired rhythms. This track is bold and unapologetic, designed to get bodies moving with its infectious energy and vibrant, driving percussion. The track’s title is no misnomer—its relentless pace and dynamic grooves are sure to induce some serious dance floor action. Coffintexts’ contribution to the EP adds a welcome diversity to the release, bringing a raw, physical energy that contrasts nicely with the more cerebral tracks that precede it.

E-Talking rounds out the EP with “Party,” a track that takes a more relaxed, Balearic approach while maintaining a progressive edge. The track’s sun-soaked melodies and warm, rolling basslines evoke images of sunset parties and open-air dance floors, making it an ideal closer for the EP. Yet, there’s a subtle undercurrent of tension and progression that keeps the track from drifting into mere background music. “Party” is a nuanced, thoughtful track that showcases E-Talking’s ability to blend the laid-back with the forward-moving, offering a fitting conclusion to 9FINITY’s debut release.

As a digital bonus, Coffintexts delivers a Dubwise 140 version of “Make U Sweat”, exclusive to Bandcamp. This rework strips the track back to its core elements, emphasizing its bass-heavy, dub-inspired aspects. The slower tempo gives the track a different kind of weight, transforming it from a peak-time club tool into a deep, immersive experience that’s perfect for more introspective moments. This version offers a fresh perspective on the original, showcasing Coffintexts’ versatility and adding extra depth to the EP.

9FINITY001” is a strong and diverse debut for James Priestley’s new label, 9FINITY. With tracks ranging from the deep and driving to the bold and percussive, the EP captures the broad, yet finely tuned, musical vision of the label. Each track stands on its own while contributing to a cohesive whole, showcasing the talents of both established and emerging artists. This release sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting journey for the label, positioning it as a new and vital player in the landscape of modern club music.
